New Features: My Home Page, Blackboard, Daylight Savings Time

May 21st, 2009 | Posted by Kevin in announcement | feature

Our product team has been working on a number of improvements on the website. Our latest improvement has been to reorganize the personal homepage.

As soon as you login, you can see the new blackboard and layout. First, it’s easier to comment and ask questions on the new blackboard. In addition, now you will be able to see your blackboard posts combined with questions that you have asked. You can also reply in a thread, so your replies can stay linked together.

We’ve also added a side column that has updates from your italki friends. We hope this will make learning a language more social. Now you can see what your italki friends are doing. We hope you’ll spend a little time to answer questions from your friends, or help them with an language issue they are facing.

We’ve also made a change to timezones recently. Many of you may have noticed that you have been asked to reselect your timezone. This is important as many students are scheduling lessons on italki, and issues like daylight savings make it crucial to synchronize clocks.

As always, please keep the feedback coming through our feedback link or through email (feedback at italki dot com). Your opinions really help us work on where we can improve the site. And keep checking out our blog. We have many more updates coming up soon, and we’ll always let you know about them here.

I believe the Italki team has done a fantastic job. Could you please provide a 'comment' section for teachers and students to comment and for them the state the reasons why the sessions cannot be confirmed. This is where the money is involved and how well does Italki know that the session has been carried out? I have a sudent who refused to comfirm jsut because he has to attend an English class. He happened to book the session and emailed to me to say that he will not attend the sesion booked.

Student: Hi KS, I m sorry but I will not be able to study today. [21May2009]
Teacher: Are you going to be busy?
Student: Yes, I going to a college, I want to enroll to an English cources
    I m going.
Teacher: Please request for cancellation from Italki or confirm the session.

He has done nothing. The session is till unconfirmed.

    Please study this..

    Please advise.

For the original italki version, the session will be confirmed by the italki system in seven days.

    I LOVE ITALKI
    hello everyone..

    KongSiong,

ChinaLily is right. If the student doesn't do anything about the session, after 7days the system will automatically confirm the session and you will receive the ITC.

If the student requests a refund, you will receive a notice which you may then dispute. Then you can enter your comments about why the ITC should be transferred to you. This is largely explained in the FAQs. http://www.italki.com/help/teaching/faq_teachin

As a teacher, if you have other issues you'd like to discuss, we suggest you address them in the Teacher's Group: http://www.italki.com/groups/1542 or send an email to teacherhelp@italki.com

Recently i noticed the possibility to tech via your platform …What if someone do not want to get payed for his lessons …He has still to create a payment account? Why should it be obligatory?

  • http://www.italki.com Kevin

    Hi Glavkos,
The payment accounts are only needed for people who want to pay or be paid. Many students are serious about learning a language and are willing to pay to find a reliable teacher to teach them long-term.
If you want to do a language exchange or help someone for no money, you’re free to connect with other italki users as friends to offer your help. You can find students by answering questions, posting in groups, and connecting to them through italki messages and chat.
